Are our beliefs based on co-constructed narratives?

Beliefs are the deeply held thoughts and perceptions that shape how we see ourselves, others, and the world - guiding behaviour, mindset, and emotional wellbeing. This leads to learn more about the narrative that is created in a healthy and unhealthy way.
The place to begin in a therapeutic space is to learn about your transference of beliefs that are authentically yours, or someone else’s, which is us working on an alliance by wishes, fears and experiences from past relationships to learn what is created authentically, and those which are co-constructed from the systems like those of care, education and work.
It is a professional and personal belief that it is easier to recall negative experiences than positive ones. Especially when our work is trauma-informed around neglect, criticism and/or rejection. A co-constructed narrative can lead to dysfunctional thoughts, which may lead to substance misuse to numb the pain the mind causes. This is known as affect regulation and removing the projection of thoughts, feelings and emotions into life.
The hope when we use unhealthy behaviours is to discontinue the flow of beliefs, thoughts, feelings and emotions into life. When the intensity increases, we can dissociate if mental and emotional health declines. There can be a space where denial is a part of daily life that helps you function when we seek out substance misuse or unhealthy stimuli like adult content and gambling. And then there is othering from people who want us to seek help.
In the United Kingdom, in 2025, there is an overwhelming need for mental and emotional health help. This highlights that we are approaching a need for private healthcare support. And not dissimilar to shopping around for the best price for an item of clothing, a car or even a holiday, there are choices for you - these give instant or long-term relief in life. If you’d like to know more about how to choose a talk therapist near me, why not read the first blog I wrote when choosing a counsellor or psychotherapist to work with?
Finally, to come back to the blog discussion. Our beliefs are based on healthy or unhealthy growth as we develop in our minds and bodies. These co-created beliefs have organised our emotions and feelings. And as we arrive at significant life chapters, we hope to grow to develop independent beliefs if possible. I promote a safe and confidential therapeutic hour for clients to explore what it means to be you, whether independent or dependent on others’ beliefs. The work is very much centred around a compassionate sense of space to integrate and shape change.
